How Background Removal Works

Our background remover uses a combination of flood-fill segmentation and edge detection techniques — the same fundamental algorithms used in professional tools like GIMP — to identify and remove backgrounds from your images. Here's the step-by-step process:

  1. Edge Sampling: The tool samples colors from the four corners and edges of your image to determine the most likely background color.
  2. Flood Fill: Starting from each corner, a flood-fill algorithm identifies all connected pixels within the specified tolerance range of the background color.
  3. Alpha Mask: Identified background pixels are set to transparent (alpha = 0), while foreground pixels remain fully opaque.
  4. Edge Feathering: A 1px feather is applied along the mask boundary to prevent harsh edges and create a natural-looking result.

For best results, use images with clear subjects against uniform backgrounds (white, black, or solid colors). Images with complex backgrounds or subjects that share colors with the background may require manual touch-up in a dedicated editor.
